Bio
Holy shit, ten years of crucial thrash! Having always been a fan of hardcore and thrash music, Travis Ginn wanted to sing in a band. After deciding that it wasn’t going to happen in St. Augustine, he relocated to Gainesville, FL in the early 90’s. His first attempt, FRIED CHRIST, lasted about two years and gave him a taste of what was to come. Shortly after they hung it up, Travis joined ASSBACKWARDS with Brian 8, singer for then local punk band SECTION 8. It was Brian’s first attempt at playing guitar in a thrash band. Although the band only played one show, it laid the groundwork for greater things.
In the summer of ‘95, New Yorker Jon Weisburg relocated to Gainesville to play drums in the pop-punk band VANBUILDERASS.
Jon’s burning desire was to do a fast band, a la CITIZEN’S ARREST and early CORROSION OF CONFORMITY. After a long summer of hanging out, Jon finally hooked up with Brian and Travis. Late night drunkenness turned into jamming. The original line up of the band was rounded out by Chris Campisi, a long time veteran of the music scene, and ASSHOLEPARADE played its first shows that fall. After connecting with bands in the area (PALATKA, END OF THE CENTURY PARTY, IN/HUMANITY), ASSHOLEPARADE recorded a demo in the fall. That demo was sold/given away by Travis and Jon, who both went on tour with VBA that winter. Upon returning, Jon decided that he wanted to focus all of his attention on AP.
As ASSHOLEPARADE started actively playing shows and touring, Campisi decided to bow out, wanting to do other projects. Enter FRIED CHRIST bassist Travis Johnson. With this line up intact, the band began recording the bulk of their releases. They did split a 7” with ANSOJUAN (Travis J’s other band), their own record (the classic AP “Bury You” 7”), and appeared on numerous compilations.
In the summer of ‘96, AP was finally ready to strike out on their own. They toured the whole US, playing shows with many bands of the day (SPAZZ, CHARLES BRONSON, BLACK ARMY JACKET, etc.). After the tour ended, AP laid down the tracks for their split LP with PALATKA, on the fledging Coalition Records label.
Summer ‘97 saw a tour with Richmond, VA’s SUPPRESSION and growing support. In January ‘98, ASSHOLEPARADE was invited to play the biggest thrash fest of the time, Fiesta Grande in San Francisco. Wanting a bigger sound, the band added guitarist Drew DeMaio for the trip. After ripping it up in SF, AP was set for another summer tour. That tour was cut short by the news of Travis J’s forthcoming daughter. Things in the fall slowed a bit, with Drew dropping off and the addition of guitarist Matt Sweeting.
After playing a handful of shows in the fall of ‘98 and winter of ‘99, AP decided to travel to Europe for an extended tour with old friends END OF THE CENTURY PARTY. New father Travis J was replaced with Darren Kucera for the tour. After a grueling eight-and-a-half week trek around Europe, AP flew home burned out. The long tour really broke the spirit of the band. The desire to pursue other interests led to everyone going their separate ways. That left fifteen unreleased songs, comprised of two recording sessions (one with DeMaio and one with Sweeting) and the unfulfilled
desire to finally put out a full length of their own.
Jump to the summer of 2004: ASSHOLEPARADE was invited to reunite to play The Fest III (Gainesville, Florida) and the wheels began to turn once again. After meeting at a party, Jon recruited Tony Marquez to replace original guitarist
Brian Johnson (who now preferred to focus on WHISKEY & Co.). After thrashing a sold out show at The Fest, AP decided to pick up where they had left off.
The spring of 2005 saw the band head out on the road for the first time since ‘98. Touring with newfound pals MUNICIPAL WASTE, ASSHOLEPARADE got a glimpse of all they had missed in their down time. Playing packed out shows with newer bands like CAUSTIC CHRIST, R.A.M.B.O., COLISEUM, and TORCHE, AP got back in the game and has found a new focus. This summer finds the release of the “Say Goodbye” EP, which is two unreleased sessions from the late ‘90’s (and the first offering since late ‘99’s “Student Ghetto Violence”, a CD that collected all their previous records.) The band is hard at work finishing up songs for a new LP, which is slated to be recorded in the fall of ‘05, and are once again hitting the road at the end of summer. Future plans to head back to Europe (but only for a month this time!) and Japan are out there. Protect yo neck!
